{"id":9332,"date":"2023-10-27T07:43:24","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T13:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/?p=9332"},"modified":"2025-04-26T16:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-26T22:31:11","slug":"inside-the-life-of-idaho-mountain-man-buckskin-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/?p=9332","title":{"rendered":"Inside the life of Idaho mountain man \u2018Buckskin Bill\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boisedev.com\/news\/2021\/06\/17\/inside-idaho-why-is-it-called-the-river-of-no-return\/\">is the most remote and largest contiguous wilderness in the Lower 48.<\/a>\u00a0That\u2019s why it\u2019s no surprise someone seeking a life of self-efficiency and solitude \u2013 would choose to live there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boisedev.com\/news\/2021\/10\/24\/inside-the-life-of-chinese-pioneer-polly-bemis\/\">Along with other homesteaders, like Polly Bemis<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 mountain man Sylvan Ambrose Hart \u2013 commonly referred to as \u2018Buckskin Bill\u2019 \u2013 made a home on the bank of the Salmon River and lived there starting in 1932 up until his death in 1980. The area is so remote, that today the only way to get to it is by jetboat or plane.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9333\" src=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827-1024x771.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827-1024x771.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827-768x578.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-27-073827.jpg 1041w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHart, who was born in Oklahoma, not only earned a degree in English and attended a graduate program in petroleum engineering, but he also studied and could speak many languages including German, Russian, Swahili, Portuguese, Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, and Norwegian.<\/p>\n<p>When Hart first came to Idaho, he bought 50 acres of land at Five Mile Bar. Here he survived and lived off the land by by fishing, hunting, growing a garden, and making his own tools like guns and knives, and clothes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForest Service rangers who encountered Hart nicknamed him \u201cBuckskin Bill\u201d because Hart dressed in deerskin clothing,\u201d Hells Canyon Tour\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hellscanyon.tours\/2022\/08\/15\/all-about-buckskin-bill-and-his-life-on-the-salmon-river\/\">website notes.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cAlthough he tanned the hides, he allegedly wore the deerskin with the hair against his skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hart\u2019s compound consisted of a two-story cabin, a blacksmithing shop, and a bomb shelter that he built himself.
