<\/font>How many of us began our ridding careers from the back of a shaggy mount much like Jessie?<\/o><\/strong><\/span> <\/font><\/p>\n

I asked Linda Paul if she wouldn\u0092t mind writing for our blog from time to time. She graciously agreed to submit a piece of her work that she felt would make a good fit in our \u0093Around the Campfire\u0094 category.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Sit back, grab a box of Kleenex, (and I promise, you will need Kleenex) and enjoy Linda\u0092s \u0093Jessie.\u0094<\/span><\/p>\n

JESSIE<\/span><\/p>\n

Jessie was my babysitter. She was my best friend. She was my grandmother. She was my grandfather. She was my sister, my cousin, and my aunt.\u00a0At times\u00a0I wished she were my mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jessie, like me, was a mongrel: half Welsh pony<\/span><\/a>, half nondescript horse. She was tall for a pony, around 12 hands high, if I remember correctly. This compares to the Shetland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that measures from 7 \u0096 11 hands high. She was a black and white\u00a0pinto\u00a0who looked more like a horse than the roly-poly image of the standard kid\u0092s Shetland monster. Jessie was ancient when she came to us\u0097beyond reliable dental aging<\/span><\/a>. She had a wise old look about her too. I, on the other hand\u00a0was young\u0097five or six years old. We spent many hours together, usually just\u00a0the two of us.\u00a0I was safe with her, there was no need\u00a0for a baby sitter. Even in the company of my mother and sister, her short legs had difficulty keeping up with the horses so we lagged behind\u0097me lost in my daydreams,\u00a0Jessie patiently watching for gopher holes.
