Idaho has several areas within its borders, earning it the title of \u201cthe wilderness state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But to Craig Gehrke with the Wilderness Society, letting mountain bikers recreate in these areas could erode the purpose of the 53-year-old law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are places we set aside for their primitive nature,&#8221; says Gehrke. &#8220;And for people to go in and experience them not in a mechanical way but basically on foot or on horseback, kind of a preservation of the first experiences pioneers had in these places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gehrke points out that the law\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wilderness.net\/NWPS\/documents\/publiclaws\/PDF\/The_Wilderness_Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explicitly bars \u201cmechanical transport.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But some Idaho groups are cheering the bill.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahostatesman.com\/news\/local\/news-columns-blogs\/letters-from-the-west\/article190084409.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Idaho Statesman reports<\/a>\u00a0the president of the Southwest Idaho Mountain Bike Association says the measure would bring younger mountain bikers into the conservation movement.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear when the bill may come up for a vote on the House floor, but Gehrke says the Wilderness Society will lobby Congressman Mike Simpson to vote against it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0FRANKIE BARNHILL\u00a0\u2022\u00a0DEC 19, 2017 There\u2019s a new push in Congress to allow mountain bikers access to wilderness areas.
