The cost for people entering the park on foot or on bike could go to $30, up from the current rate of $10 to $15.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">The cost of the annual pass, which permits entrance into all federal lands and parks, would remain at $80.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/np1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4043\" src=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/np1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"891\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/np1.jpg 891w, https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/np1-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sbbch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/np1-768x503.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">The proposal would affect the following 17 national parks during the 2018 peak season:<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">\n<ul class=\"cnn_rich_text\">\n<li>Arches<\/li>\n<li>Bryce Canyon<\/li>\n<li>Canyonlands<\/li>\n<li>Denali<\/li>\n<li>Glacier<\/li>\n<li>Grand Canyon<\/li>\n<li>Grand Teton<\/li>\n<li>Olympic<\/li>\n<li>Sequoia &amp; Kings Canyon<\/li>\n<li>Yellowstone<\/li>\n<li>Yosemite<\/li>\n<li>Zion<\/li>\n<li>Acadia<\/li>\n<li>Mount Rainier<\/li>\n<li>Rocky Mountain<\/li>\n<li>Shenandoah<\/li>\n<li>Joshua Tree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Peak pricing would affect each park&#8217;s busiest five months for visitors.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/orgs\/1207\/10-24-2017-fee-changes-proposal.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Park Service<\/a>\u00a0said the increase would help pay for badly needed improvements, including to roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms and other visitor services at the parks. The fee hikes could also boost national park revenue by $70 million per year, it said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">&#8220;The infrastructure of our national parks is aging and in need of renovation and restoration,&#8221; Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke said in a statement.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Of the 417 national park sites, 118 charge an entrance fee.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">The National Park service has opened the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/parkplanning.nps.gov\/proposedpeakseasonfeerates.%20W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal to public comments for 30 days at its website.<\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">The proposal was blasted by the National Parks Conservation Association, a nonpartisan advocacy group.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">&#8220;We should not increase fees to such a degree as to make these places &#8212; protected for all Americans to experience &#8212; unaffordable for some families to visit,&#8221; the group&#8217;s president and CEO Theresa Pierno said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npca.org\/articles\/1669-administration-proposes-massive-park-fee-increase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0in a statement.\u00a0<\/a>&#8220;The solution to our parks&#8217; repair needs cannot and should not be largely shouldered by its visitors.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">&#8220;<strong>The administration just proposed a major cut to the National Park Service budget even as parks struggle with billions of dollars in needed repairs<\/strong>,&#8221; Pierno said. &#8220;If the administration wants to support national parks, it needs to walk the walk and work with Congress to address the maintenance backlog.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">On the National Park Service&#8217;s Facebook page, some commented that the proposal was reasonable since it was going to improve and maintain the parks. Others lamented that it would price working class people out of making trips that they had saved up for.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Entrance fees at several national parks, including Mount Rainer, Grand Teton and Yellowstone, went up in 2015 to their current price.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Those fee increases didn&#8217;t seem to deter visitors. In 2016, National Park Services received\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/national-parks-fee-increase-proposal\/index.html\">a record-breaking 331 million visits,<\/a>\u00a0which marked a 7.7% increase over 2015.
